Robert Mills House in Columbia, reached out to WBG’s Service Team for help with a persistent issue within their historic building. The building, which houses offices adjacent to a working greenhouse, was experiencing severe heat in the main office area, workstations, and even the bathrooms during the famously hot summer months. A nearby firm had previously installed a Daikin VRF system, but it failed to provide adequate cooling. The system comprised of a single condenser connected to 2-ducted air handlers & 1-wall mounted air handler head, but was struggling to meet the building’s cooling demands, prompting us to send W.B. Guimain’s senior HVAC service technicians to assess the situation.

Upon investigation, the Service Team discovered that the condenser had been inexplicably installed inside a section of the building. Hot air was vented outside, but was being recirculated back through the facilities large louvers, re-entering the area which housed the condensing unit, thus creating a cycle of hot air that led to high head pressure, frequent breaker trips, and ultimately…a hot work space for their team to be in.

WBG’s Service Team demonstrated their HVAC technical expertise and ability to quickly deliver a solution to their immediate need. Initially, attempts were made and monitored to resolve the issue by reconfiguring the venting of the louvers to direct the hot air away from the condenser. But after many adjustments, the temperature around the condenser remained dangerously high at around 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

Recognizing that the only viable solution was to move the condenser, our team carefully relocated and reinstalled the unit in a more suitable outdoor location on the property. Freed from the suffocating environment of recirculating hot air, the condenser was finally able to operate efficiently. As a result, the office building’s cooling capabilities were restored to full functionality, ensuring a comfortable environment for the occupants. The WBG Service Team was commended for their fast action to resolve of this mechanical HVAC issue.
