The Challenge

The South Carolina Department of Transportation Headquarters in Columbia, South Carolina had relied on an aging HVAC infrastructure that was connected to a central chilled water & steam line system, limiting both efficiency and operational control. While this project was taking place, it was known that the headquarters was going to be fully occupied and operational. Each and every phase of the project had to be planned and coordinated with all parties involved to ensure no business disruptions while also keeping said occupants comfortable.

The Solution

WBG’s Team was chosen for this project due to our steadfast relationship with Trane, as well as our ability to jointly work with Trane’s Team for Design/Build projects. Over the course of the year, much was completed to improve upon the buildings efficiency & reliability.

  • Installation of a standalone water cooled chiller plant within the garage.
  • Installation of a new boiler plant within the mechanical penthouse.
  • Replaced chilled water coils.
  • Upgraded outdate fans with new fan wall technology.
  • Installed advanced electronic air filtration system.
  • Replaced every variable air volume (VAV) system within the occupied office floors.

Due to the SCDOT headquarters remaining fully operational throughout the year long project, each and every phase of the job was strategically planned & scheduled with all parties involved to minimize disruptions within their office space. This successful project showcases WBG’s ability to continually deliver complex mechanical overhauls and renovations at occupied sites due to our working experience providing mechanical solutions for our commercial partners throughout South Carolina.

  • “Here at WBG, we have a values-based safety culture—one that connects workplace safety to the real human impact accidents have on families, coworkers, and communities. This approach has proved powerful because it moves safety beyond rules and compliance and makes it personal and meaningful.  Don’t be selfish, be safe.”
