The Challenge
Prysmian North America’s manufacturing site located in Abbeville was in need to expand production at its manufacturing facility to keep up with demand. The company was in need to increase its process cooling capacity within the plant, as well as constructing a new high voltage testing facility to be within their plant space. This expansion required new mechanical systems that would in turn support the manufacturing processes, maintain precise humidity and temperature control for the HVDC cable testing, and provide ample ventilation throughout the production plant all the while not disrupting their manufacturing process.
The Solution
WBG’s Design/Build Team partnered with Prysmian to deliver on a comprehensive solution that would support the production expansion, testing area, and give their team members some ventilation relief from the relentless South Carolina heat. Our team installed (2) BAC closed circuit cooling towers, complete with 8″ process piping, that provided their manufacturing operations. At their HVDC testing tower, a 20k CFM air handling unit that was engineered to maintain the necessary conditioned air for accurate cable testing was installed. Lastly, WBG had installed extensive ventilation systems throughout the plant capable of moving a combined 160k CFM of air. Over the course of a year onsite, all completed work was done without requiring production shutdown, allowing seamless production to occur. By combining WBG’s engineering expertise and construction expertise, WBG’s Design/Build Team provided Prysmian expand its operations while maintaining a safe and uninterrupted operation for continued manufacturing growth.
