The Challenge

With Becton Dickinson was in need to expand upon its current manufacturing capacity, they needed to transform an existing warehouse space into a highly controlled production environment. The project was much more than a quick turn around renovation as it demanded a complete mechanical redesign for a clean room condition along with providing the critical utilities needed for precision healthcare device manufacturing. In addition to the upgrade of the existing facility, the expansion also required a dedicated process cooling & compressed air system that would be able to support the new production area while also accommodating the environmental standards expected in the medical manufacturing industry.

The Solution

Leveraging our longstanding relationship with Becton Dickinson on past projects coupled with our experience in complex industrial manufacturing environments, WBG partnered with the projects team through a Design/Build delivery approach, all the while collaborating closely with the project’s engineer to develop a solution to meet the facilities production goals. Working under the team at UTT Construction, WBG’s Team had transformed an existing warehouse space into a clean room production space. This was done by modifying the facilities existing air handler to support the newly created manufacturing space. Our team had also installed a HEPA filtration system, fabricated and installed new duct work, as well as installing a high pressure fog humidification system needed to maintain the strict humidity and temperature conditions within the injection molding area.

WBG’s Design/Build Team had provided both the design and construction of a dedicated chiller & compressed air plant nearby that exclusively serves the new production area. This included the installation of over 1,000 feet of rooftop chilled water piping, a 200-ton Trane process chiller, and a 150 HP Atlas Copco air compressor connected to the line with a 4 inch air header. Completed in a 10 month time span, this project when finished and commissioned, provided Becton Dickinson’s facility for long term operational success.

  • “Here at WBG, we have a values-based safety culture—one that connects workplace safety to the real human impact accidents have on families, coworkers, and communities. This approach has proved powerful because it moves safety beyond rules and compliance and makes it personal and meaningful.  Don’t be selfish, be safe.”
