October – National Air Quality Awareness

Every month throughout the calendar year highlights a range of causes and issues you may or may not be aware of.  The month of October is no different with raising awareness on Breast Cancer, Mental Health, and Cybersecurity.  May not be at the top of everyone’s mind, but the month of October is also National Indoor Air Quality Awareness.

Having adequate indoor air quality is of great importance in hospitals and other healthcare like facilities, where maintaining a clean and sterile environment is critical for the health & safety of patients, staff, and visitors alike. Airborne contaminants of the likes of bacteria, viruses, and other pollutants are easily spread through ventilation systems, posing a risk, especially to at risk individuals.  Implementing a scheduled HVAC filter program can be a line of defense in minimizing these risks.

Equally important, is the necessary service of air handling units, variable air volume systems, and HVAC cassettes, which play a key role in circulating and filtering the air for ones space. Proper maintenance of this equipment ensures that air is effectively moved & filtered, reducing the potential spread of pathogens to maintain a safe environment.

In educational settings of the likes of K-12 schools and colleges, having indoor air quality has been shown to have a direct impact on the health and academic performance of students and staff. Poor air quality can lead to an increase in respiratory issues, allergies, and absenteeism. High concentrations of CO2 from poor ventilation can reduce cognitive function, affecting both focus and productivity in classrooms.

Ensuring that HVAC systems are not only changing filters on a schedule but also maintaining the full range of air distribution systems is crucial for optimal air movement and ventilation in large and often heavily occupied spaces like schools.

Not forgetting about the areas where a lot of us walk into for our 9-5, much like educational sites, having proper indoor air quality is necessary.  Poorly ventilated spaces where neglected HVAC systems are in place can lead to “Sick Building Syndrome”.  Call-outs and absentee employees due to constant headaches, fatigue, and overall irritation due to the air quality.
