Every year Memorial Day weekend brings families, communities, and veterans together across this Nation to honor the men & women who gave their lives in service to the United States. While many recognize the long weekend as the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day carries a far deeper meaning.

South Carolina’s connection to America’s military legacy dates back to the earliest days of the nation.  The state has long supported military service through installations such as Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Shaw Air Force Base, Joint Base Charleston, and Fort Jackson. Thousands of South Carolinians have served in conflicts including World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

For many families across South Carolina, Memorial Day is personal. It represents fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, and neighbors whose sacrifices helped preserve the freedoms Americans enjoy every day.  Memorial Day is specifically dedicated to honoring military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Unlike Veterans Day, which celebrates all who served, Memorial Day focuses on the remembrance and sacrifice of those.

Across the United States, American flags are placed at cemeteries, memorial parks, and veteran monuments as citizens pause to remember those who never returned home. Churches, civic/veterans groups, and local governments organize events that reinforce the importance of preserving the memory of fallen service members.

In towns large and small throughout South Carolina, Memorial Day serves as a reminder that freedom carries a cost.
