Education

W. B. Guimarin has vast experience in both K-12 and Higher Education throughout the state of South Carolina. School projects come in all shapes and sizes.  Here are some sample projects recently completed:

K-12:

New Stall High School, Charleston County School District
North Charleston, SC

This new construction, 2-story, 240,000 sf facility is representative of the scale of many new high schools throughout the state.  The mechanical systems on such a large building are complex operations, and Stall High School was no exception; it employs an ice storage thermal system to minimize its energy costs.  Such state of the art schools also have full science labs with associated specialty plumbing systems.

Hand Middle School, Richland County School District One
Columbia, SC

Hand Middle School was a 90,000 sf historical building constructed in the 1930’s that needed a complete overhaul.  But the challenge was replacing the existing mechanical systems while the building was occupied—the building was renovated in phases, and because they were on a closed-loop system, each area had to be isolated so that heating and cooling operations would continue in other areas during all times.  The job also included 15,000 sf of new construction.

Greenville High School,Greenville County School District
Greenville, SC

Similarly, Greenville High School was a 1920’s historic structure requiring extensive renovation throughout its 190,000 sf footprint and also included 75,000 sf of new construction.  A new gym was also added to the contract when renovation uncovered structural failure in the original building.

Irmo Middle School Building R Renovation, Lexington and Richland County School District Five
Irmo, SC

This project, where W. B. Guimarin acted as the prime contractor, required the replacement of not only the HVAC system, but also upgrades to the fire sprinkler, electrical, security, and data systems.  Additionally, because of the extent of the work being performed, the entire building had to be brought up to current code standards, requiring that outdated wooden walls be replaced with a metal stud system and a new ceiling be installed.  Inspections were done concurrent with construction, and the ambitious project was completed in just two months over the summer break.

Higher Education:

W. B. Guimarin has had a presence on nearly every institute of higher education in the state: private and public, technical schools and universities.  We have worked on renovations and new construction on many types of structures: classroom buildings, dorms, administrative buildings, athletic facilities, cafeterias, science laboratories, and performing arts centers.  Some samples:

New Science Center, College of Charleston
Charleston, SC

This state of the art laboratory building on the corner of Coming and Calhoun streets in downtown Charleston was, at the time, the largest construction project ever undertaken by the College of Charleston and by W. B.Guimarin, both in terms of dollars and manhours.  For a more in depth view of the many systems required for the mechanical and plumbing operations of this building, please click here.  W.B. Guimarin was awarded the ABC Carolinas Eagle Award for Excellence in Construction, ABC’s highest honor, for this project.

Strom Thurmond Fitness Center, University of South Carolina
Columbia, SC

The Strom Thurmond Fitness Center at the University of South Carolina is widely regarded as the best of its type in the country on a college campus. In addition to the aquatic center’s indoor pool, the facility is also home to 6 racquetball/squash courts, 5 basketball/volleyball courts, 1 floor hockey/soccer field, large cardio and strength training areas, an indoor track, and a climbing wall.

Chiller Lift: The Peace Center

September 6, 2011

The expansion of the Peace Center in Greenville, SC will require all of the capacity of the Peace Center's existing chillers.  A new chiller is required in the Gunter building to serve existing Air Handlers in the Gunter building--but fitting this new 220 ton chiller into ... Continue
